Recently, the English version of Extraordinary Rescue, an episode from the six-part documentary series Behind the Medals: We Fought Side by Side produced by China Central Newsreel and Documentary Film Studio (Group), held its first public screening in the United States at EAA AirVenture2026, the worlds premier aviation event hosted in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The screening took place at the Skyview Theater within the EAA Aviation Museum. The venue was packed on the day of the screening. As the film drew to a close, the audience remained immersed in the story and rose to their feet, delivering sustained and warm applause.

This grand aviation gathering, drawing over 500,000 attendees from more than 80 countries across the globe, bore witness to a touching story originating from China’s eastern coast—a story indelibly tied to Sanmen in Zhejiang Province.

On April 18, 1942, after carrying out the bombing raid on Tokyo, the Doolittle Raiders ran out of fuel. Fifteen warplanes were forced to make emergency landings in China. Crew No.7 crashed onto the beach of Dasha Village on Nantian Island in Sanmen County, while Crew No.15 plunged into the waters off Tantoushan Island, leaving ten pilots in mortal danger. At that time, Sanmen Bay was under Japanese occupation, with Japanese and puppet patrols omnipresent, rendering the situation extremely perilous.

Local residents and troops in Sanmen rose to the occasion. They rescued five injured crew members of Crew No.7 by breaking through enemy blockades within 72 hours. Subsequently, over five days and nights, the locals sheltered the airmen of Crew No.15 in island caves, moving them under cover of darkness while avoiding detection by day. Ultimately, all ten pilots escaped safely.

Larry D. Kelley, host of the screening event, is a veteran researcher and communicator of the history of the Doolittle Raid and has been awarded the title of Honorary Doolittle Raider. During the production of Extraordinary Rescue, Larry D. Kelley, together with the filming crew and Zheng Weiyong, an expert on the Doolittle Raid from Quzhou, made a special trip to Sanmen. Supported by the Sanmen Media Center for film arrangements and guided on-site by Zhang Hongxiao, a local expert on Sanmen’s history and records, the group visited the sites where the pilots made emergency landings, villages that sheltered them, evacuation routes and the hospital where the airmen received treatment. Standing at these historic locations, they gained a profound understanding of the immense sacrifices made by the Chinese people to rescue the American airmen. As Larry acknowledged in the documentary:”The core reason why those 64 young Americans survived is that the Chinese people risked their own lives to save them. Locals could have turned a blind eye back then, yet everyone chose to lend a hand. We fought side by side, and this story must never be forgotten.”

Across 84 years, the friendship forged amid the flames of war has never faded, stretching from the turbulent waves of Sanmen Bay to the big screens in the United States. The successful screening of Extraordinary Rescue has brought the bravery and benevolence of Sanmen’s residents and militiamen to the eyes of the world. It is reported that the EAA Aviation Museum will host a repeat screening of the film in the spring of 2027. To mark the 85th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid in April of the same year, the documentary will continue to be presented on platforms including the Air Force Association of the United States. The extraordinary rescue story of Sanmen is spreading from the shores of the East China Sea to the wider world.
